How Healthy Aging Will Improve Your Life
Every single day you age a little. It is impossible to stop the clock but it is possible to slow the aging process down.
Part of aging is genetic and there is not a lot you can do about that.
Until we discover the fountain of youth we all have to live with getting older. Every person that has ever lived on this earth has had to deal with aging.
You cannot stop aging but you can make choices that help you age slower and healthier.
The choices you make will have a big effect on how you live your life. In this article I am going to show you how healthy aging will improve your life.
Do you want to slow down the aging process?
You need to start working on it today. Here are 24 1/2 tips to aging gracefully in no particular order.
1. Get A Good Nights Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep will boost your energy and let your mind think clearly. A good nights sleep will boost your immune system, reduce stress, and help you make better decisions. Researchers have proved that a good nights sleep is necessary for good health.
2. Walking, Running, Swimming, etc.
You need to get your body moving. Figure out which exercise is best for you and get your “behind” in gear.
Start walking in the morning as soon as you wake up. Walking will get your body going, loosen up your muscles, and reduce stress. It will get your blood flowing, and alleviate anxiety. Walking will make you feel better and more alive. You will burn calories and get your heart pumping.
Running which is my exercise of choice will also reduce stress and get that heart pumping. I could write all day about running but lets save that for another article.
Swimming will do all of the above with a lot less stress on the body. So if you have knee or structural problems swimming maybe the exercise for you.
3. Stay Active
I am not talking about standard exercise here. Try to stay active in all aspects of your life. Sitting at a desk all day tightens up your whole body especially your neck, back, and legs. Get up and walk around. Stand sometimes at your desk.
Walk to the store instead of driving. Park your car at the other end of the parking lot when you drive to the store. This will ensure less door dings and also put a little more walking in your life.
Staying active throughout your life will do wonders for helping you age gracefully.
4. Get A Check Up
Get a physical checkup once every two years and maybe more as you get older.
5. Chemicals and Drugs
Keep your intake of caffeine to a reasonable level. I never drink regular coffee because the caffeine makes me jumpy. I do get some caffeine in the dark chocolate that I am addicted to.
Studies have shown that caffeine may actually be good for you but certainly if it keeps you from sleeping soundly at night don’t drink it after mid day.
I’m not even going to bring up cigarettes here. Oops well I just did. If you’re not smart enough to not smoke than you might as well quit reading now.
Alcohol in moderation is not going to hurt you unless it leads to drinking in more than moderation.
6. The Workplace
Be careful that your workplace is not negatively effecting your health. I’m talking physically here. We already know it is bad for you mentally. Just kidding.
Take a good look at your work environment and see if it is hazardous to your health.
7. Stress Control
Stress is one of the biggest contributors to bad health and is insidious because you may not notice its affects for years. If your job is stressful try to work on controlling your stress and anxiety.
Stress affects your blood pressure, heart, and nervous system. Stress can take over your emotions, actions, and behavior.
The more bad habits you have the more stress you’re going to have.
8. Positive People
Multivitamins will help you get vitamins and minerals that you might be lacking in your diet. You need to be very careful about which vitamins you buy.
Recent testing showed that some of the biggest companies in the country are selling supplements that do not have what is listed on the label, in the bottle.

Find the things in your life that make you happy. Unhappiness, stress, and depression age you fast.
11. Eating Right For Healthy Aging
Guess what “you are what you eat.” Eating right goes a long way to keeping you healthy. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables they are full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals and are low in calories and fat.
I never feel I am getting enough veggies so I buy a green food powder called “Garden Of Life Perfect Food – Super Green Formula.” I mix a spoon full of it each day with a little water and drink it with a meal. Not the best tasting stuff on earth but great for you.
Try to cut down on the fried foods and sugar. I cut soda out of my diet decades ago.
Remember those white foods may not be very good for you. I’m talking about white sugar, white flour and white rice. Moderation is the key.
12. Boost your metabolism
Exercise and weight training will build muscle which boosts your metabolism. This will help you burn more calories during the day.
Make sure that you eat breakfast. Not eating breakfast in the morning will cause your metabolism to slow down
Eating spicy foods that contain pepper or chili will also boost your metabolism.
13. Please Drink The Water
Most bodily functions require water. If you are lacking water in your system your body will slow down. Water also helps remove toxins from your body.
When you meditate your mind and body are focused and relaxed.
15. Positive Attitude
Your thoughts affect your mind, body, and attitude. Your attitude effects your appearance, disposition, and everyone around you. Your thoughts are very powerful.
Positive thoughts have an invigorating effect. Usually the people around a person emitting positive thoughts are energized by their attitude. A positive attitude attracts.
Negative thoughts have a sapping effect on other people and on yourself. Try to catch yourself when you have negative thoughts. Turn them around and think positively.
Adopt positive thinking today. Make positive thinking a part of your life. Studies have shown that a positive attitude actually slows down aging, makes you healthier, and helps you cope better with stress.
What’s not to like about a positive attitude? You will be healthier, have more friends, and your karma will be better.
Willpower is the ability to resist short-term temptations in order to meet long-term goals.
You need to have willpower in order to enact changes in your life. Start today and when you are convinced the changes are good make a long term plan.
One of the reasons that I run first thing in the morning is because if I delay all kinds of things come up that give me an excuse not to run.
Get up and do a short walk or run and make a commitment that the next day you will walk or run a little farther.
Take control of your actions. Do not procrastinate because it leads to the laziness.
Take control of your thoughts. Earlier I told you that you are what you eat but “you are also what you think.”
17.You Need Massage
If you can afford it get regular massage. Massage loosens up the body, get rid of toxins, and relieves stress. I think it was Bob Hope who attributed his longevity to getting regular massage.
Man is a social animal. He needs social interaction to stay mentally healthy. Even if you are super independent like myself you need some social interaction to stay in touch with the world and your feelings. Family and friends are critical for aging healthily.
I never feel more alive than when I am traveling. One of the highlights of my life was traveling around the world for a year seeing new places and meeting new people. Almost every minute of your day there is something new and you stay in the present. You are never more alive than when you are traveling.

Some people enjoy working. I have seen a number of people in my life retire and die within a couple of years because they did not know what to do with themselves. If you’re lucky enough to have work that you love then maybe you don’t need to retire.
If you want to retire or are forced to retire you should find other activities to keep you busy. Maybe you have a hobby that you can now spend a lot more time on.
Staying busy with positive endeavors will go a long way to helping you be happy which slows down the aging process.
22. Warning: Relaxing Is Good For Your Health
As you get older I think the little annoyances become less and less important. The things that sent me into a frenzy when I was in my twenties don’t even affect me anymore.
We’re only here for a short time. When it’s all over the little things and some of the big things that stressed us out turn out to be so trivial.
Remember something that you are fretting about right now will seem like nothing in a few days.
Doing everything you can to set your life up so you are not doing to many things that you do not like. Do you want to spend forty years of your life in a job you don’t like. If you are already in that situation figure out what you need to do to get out of that job.
In the world that we live in today it is hard to achieve freedom without money. Get your financial life in order and spend less than you make. Over time you will set yourself up to do what you want to do when you want to do it within reason.
Simplify your life and you will reduce the amount of stress that you need to deal with. Less stuff will lighten your load. Your physical load but even more importantly your mental load.
