Refurbished items are usually electronic items that have been returned to the manufacturer for various reasons. The company fixes and tests the items and then resells them. Generally they are as good as new but with a discounted price. I have personally bought a number of computers this way without any problems.
4. Wash With Cold Water
Wash your clothes in cold water. It will cut your electricity bill and your clothes will last longer.
5. Do Not Buy Anything Over $20 On Impulse
Anything that costs over $20.00 do not buy on a whim. Think about it for 24 hours and decide whether you really need the item. Also during this time you can do a little online research on the product.
6. Look For Free Entertainment
Look in your local newspaper or online for free happenings where you live. There are also a number of free apps available for your phone that will help you find entertainment in your area.
7. Cash Back Credit Cards
The Sallie Mae Mastercard will give you 5% cash back on your first $250 spent on gas and groceries each month. That is $250 each. It will also give you 5% cash back on most Amazon purchases. Do not get this card or any other credit card if you do not pay off the balance every month. Note that the card says you can use your 5% to pay down student loans but you can also take it as credit in your credit card account.

9. Don’t Buy Bottled Water
According to the NRDC 25% to 40% of bottled water is just tap water. Regulation of the bottled water industry is weak or nonexistent. Fill a bottle with tap water at your house instead of spending 100 times more for bottled water.
10. Turn Down Your Thermostat
When it is cold outside turn down your heat a little bit and put on more clothes.
11. Turn Up Your Thermostat
When it is hot outside use less air conditioning. Make use of fans and wear less clothes but please don’t post any pictures here.

Use the notes app in your phone to remind yourself of things you need to do and things you need to buy. For instance if you have a list of the things you need at the grocery store in your phone it will save you from having to make a second trip for something you forgot.
20. Bet To Skip Desert
Have an ongoing bet with your spouse. If either orders desert in a restaurant he or she needs to give the other one $100. I know a couple that does this and as you would expect they do not eat very many desserts in restaurants. They also save money and stay thin.

Think about who you could carpool with to work and then do it.
22. Buy A Fuel Efficient Car

Check your tires every time you get gas. Under inflated tires will cause you to use more gas and wear out the tires faster.
24. Buy Off Brand Toothpaste
Buy the generic toothpaste or brand that doesn’t do any advertising. You may save up to 50%. If you look closely the ingredients are usually the same as the higher priced toothpaste.
25. Buy In Bulk
Buy items that you continually use in bulk.
26. Don’t Put Up With Bank Fees
If your bank is charging you any fees you need to look for a new bank. Also consider online banks. They have much less overhead and therefore are more competitive.
27. Turn Off The Lights
Always turn off the lights when you’re not using them.
28. Shop Your Cell Plan
Be sure you shop around for the best cell phone plan. If you already have a plan shop that around also.
Try to fit more walking into your life. If you usually drive a mile to Starbucks consider walking there instead.

Use RetailMeNot 500,000 coupons for 50,000 stores. You can also just throw the word coupon code and the item you are looking for in Google to find discount codes.

If you are not in a hurry and you have easy access to public transportation try using it. It’s a nice change and will take you a little ways out of your comfort zone.

I have an Andis Speedmaster Hair Clipper . Every three weeks my wife or oldest son gives me a haircut. It’s fast, saves money, and you do it in the comfort of your own home.
If you have a Goodwill store near you that it is in a very nice area rummage around. Sometimes you find really nice things for ten cents on the dollar.
34. Check Reviews On Big Purchases
Always check online reviews before you make a big purchase. Quality is just as important as the best price.
35. Do Not Carry A Balance On Your Credit Card
Never carry a balance on a credit card. Use credit cards strategically to gain points, miles, and cash back and then pay off the balance at the end of the month.
36. Buy Store Brand Or Generic
I have allergies. Instead of buying Claritin for a dollar a pill I buy Equate Allergy Relief which has the exact same ingredients for twenty cents a pill.

There are very good low pressure shower heads on the market which use a lot less water than a normal shower head. I have used the Niagara Earth Massage 1.25GPM Low Flow Showerhead for years. It will save the average couple about 3000 gallons of water a year.
43. Use Angie’s List
Use Angie’s List to hire contractors. It is very competitive and you can check reviews. The contractors bend over backwards to make sure everything is OK so they don’t get bad reviews. I used a guy to put in some laminate floors a few years back. He was great and the price was very competitive.

Whenever one of your insurance policies is ending shop around before you renew.
45. Do Not Buy Brand Name Razors
